How Many Photos Should a Photo Dump Have?
The platform ceilings are 20 on Instagram and 35 on TikTok. The number that actually performs is five to ten, and the reason is completion rate rather than taste.

Why five to ten wins
The constraint is not storage, it is attention. Three things push the number down:
- **Completion rate.** Reaching the final slide is a strong signal on both Instagram and TikTok. A nine-slide post gets finished. A twenty-slide post gets abandoned around slide six, and abandonment is what the algorithm actually sees.
- **The weakest-link effect.** A dump is judged by its dullest image, not its best. Every extra photo is another chance to include a dull one.
- **Swipe fatigue.** Swiping is a small cost that people pay willingly a few times and grudgingly after that.
Thirty-five mediocre slides lose to seven good ones. The ceiling is not a target, it is a limit.
When to go longer
There are legitimate reasons to push toward fifteen or twenty:
- A full trip covering several distinct places.
- A year or season recap, where the length is the point.
- A genuinely varied set where no two images repeat each other.
Even then, sequence carefully. Every slide past ten needs to earn its place.
When to go shorter
Three or four photos is a perfectly good dump when the set is tight — one evening, one walk, one meal. Nobody has ever complained that a post was too short.
A rule that works
Take your selection, then remove the two weakest images. Look again. If nothing obvious jumps out as removable, you are done. That usually lands people between six and nine without any counting.
